The Edinburgh Castle is the most visited attraction in all of Scotland. Reserving your ticket beforehand will help you avoid the never-ending queues for the ticket office.
The Edinburgh Castle is a large fortress found in the Scottish capital, on the rocky peak of an extinct volcano, from where, in times of war, the whole city and port could be controlled.
This impressive fortification has been a royal residence, a prison, army barracks, and the scene of many wars. It is currently the most visited historic attraction in the country.
What to see?
The castle has more than enough to keep you occupied for hours on end, but here are some of the unmissable buildings, museums and expositions:
St Margaret's Chapel: This is the oldest building in Edinburgh, constructed around 1130, now just at the entrance to the castle
The Royal Palace: Residence to the Scottish Kings, it was built around 1430 and remodelled in the 17th century on the orders of James VI.
The Crown Jewels Chamber: Located within the Royal Palace, this room stands out for its exposition of jewels and treasures belonging to the Scottish Crown.
Prisons of War: This was the first wartime prison constructed in Edinburgh, in 1758.
