3-Day Edinburgh Itinerary

Discover Edinburgh's top monuments, castles, alleyways, and hills with this complete itinerary designed to make the most of the Scottish capital in just 3 days.

Packing your bags for the Scottish capital? Edinburgh is a city that seems frozen in time, where ghost legends blend with a uniquely stately elegance. With 3 days, you'll have just enough time to fall in love with its medieval alleyways (the famous closes), climb its hills, and of course, try a good whisky. Here's the full route!

Arrival Day

After landing, the easiest way to get to the heart of this Gothic fairytale is to book a transfer straight to your hotel. Once you've settled in, head straight to the Royal Mile. If you don't want to miss a single detail, joining a tour of its alleyways is a great idea.

Our recommendation is to let yourself be guided by the sound of bagpipes that often fills this main avenue. Passing the imposing St. Giles' Cathedral, make your way down to Grassmarket. Once the site of public executions, it's now one of the liveliest spots in the city for dinner. Find an iconic pub, order a pint of local beer, and raise a glass! Your Scottish adventure has officially begun.

Day 1

Waking up in the Old Town feels like stepping back into the 16th century. To make sure you don't miss a single secret of this UNESCO World Heritage labyrinth, we suggest starting with the Edinburgh free tour... the best way to understand the clan system and why the city grew upward rather than outward.

After that, it's time to conquer Edinburgh Castle. On the way out, head down winding Victoria Street, where colorful terraces are the perfect place to pick up some crafts or tartan wool.

As the sun goes down, remember you're in one of the most haunted cities in the world. We'd highly recommend the Edinburgh ghost tour, a thrilling and fun way to explore the local catacombs and cemeteries. End the day by climbing Calton Hill to watch the city light up below.

Day 2

On the second day, cross the bridge to discover the New Town, where the streets are wide and the facades are symmetrical. Stroll through Princes Street Gardens and visit the Scott Monument before diving back into Scotland's deepest traditions.

What would the trip be without trying its star product? On the Scottish whisky tour, you'll learn to distinguish the nuances of each region during a guided tasting. And for those who grew up dreaming of Hogwarts letters, the Edinburgh Harry Potter tour will take you to the places that inspired J.K. Rowling. Don't forget to stop by Greyfriars Kirkyard to say hello to the statue of little Bobby the dog before enjoying a haggis dinner at one of the nearby restaurants.

Day 3

Your last day in the city is perfect for exploring its most stately side. Following the Royal Mile all the way to its lower end, you'll reach the Palace of Holyroodhouse, where the story of Mary Queen of Scots is still very much alive. You can buy tickets to the palace at this link. If you fancy some wild nature without leaving the city, climb Arthur's Seat... the effort is more than rewarded with the best 360-degree views in the region.

For the afternoon, we suggest a change of scenery: head to Leith. This port neighborhood has a fascinating bohemian atmosphere. The perfect finishing touch before saying goodbye to the city over a fresh seafood dinner by the waterfront.
